St. Francis of Assisi is thought to be the creator of the first nativity play, which took place on Christmas Eve in Greccio, Italy in 1223.
In Poland these plays were introduced in the 13th century by St. Kinga, the wife of King Boleslaw V the Chaste.
Jaselka (the word comes from “Jaslo”, which means crib or manger), is a play recounting the history of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.
In Polish tradition, the nativity play not only depicts the holy family, shepherds and the three kings, but often includes the townspeople, knights, peasants working in the fields, women during harvest, devils and “death” (the frightful grim reaper), and even Polish national heroes! All, of course suitably attired. This truly is Christmas Polish theatre at its best.
On 7th January, Jaselka at Antokol was beautifully produced by the staff and their families and was greatly appreciated by all who were present. You can judge yourselves by looking at the fantastic photographs. What a wonderful afternoon it was.
